Africa is one of the continents most threatened by climate change. Increasing extreme weather events — droughts, floods, irregular rainfall, and temperature spikes — are disrupting agriculture, destroying assets, and hampering livelihoods of smallholder farmers and rural communities.
Rural communities face severely limited access to user-friendly, timely, and spatially disaggregated data including future forecasts. National agricultural statistics systems are not prepared for the frequency and severity of future climatic and economic shocks.
Existing systems do not adequately capture gender-specific or intersectional disadvantages. Early identification of vulnerable communities paired with gender-specific data is essential for differentiated prevention strategies and targeted response measures.
